Harvest of our muscadine grapes generally occurs August and September. This is an exciting time for the vineyard as it is inundated with machinery to pick our quality wine grapes. A mechanical harvester found its home at Log Cabin Farm & Vineyard in 2004. Manufactured in Germany, our Braud 2720 is the only one of its kind in the Northeast Florida area and one of only seven mechanical harvesters in the state of Florida.
The mechanical harvester provides great relief to labor. In the early years, it would take nearly eight hours to pick two acres. Today, we can harvest five acres in less than an hour. The mechanical harvester straddles the top trellis of the row and gently shakes the grapes into a conveyor system, which transfers the fruit into two (1) ton self-contained tanks. Once the harvester is full, we dump the grapes into field boxes which hold one ton. Then we start the process all over again.
Our muscadines are processed at an optimum time to produce wine. We conduct field samples to determine the best time to process the fruit of the vine into wine. This is a small window and harvest will occur quickly thereafter. Fresh, quality muscadine table fruit available during harvest season-sorry, no u-pick.
